History & History Related Items

A French officer and fur trader, Sieur Jean B. Girardot came to Cape Rock around 1733. The name "Cape Girardeau" came from the combing of his name and Cape Rock. The cape was later demolished during railroad construction years later. About 1792, Louis Lorimier came as Spain's agent in Indian affairs. He began building the city after receiving large land grants. After being plotted in 1806, the town was incorporated in 1808. The area was part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase.

The old 20 foot bridge across the Mississippi was built in September 1928 and replaced a ferry. In December 2003, a new four lane cable stay bridge was completed and named the Bill Emerson Memorial Bidge for former US Representative Bill Emerson who helped to get the funding to build the bridge.

Cape Girardeau was also known to some as "The City of Roses" because of a nine-mile stretch of highway that was once lined with dozens of rose bushes. Although there used to be many prominent rose gardens around the community, few of these gardens are in existence today.
