History & History Related Items Cornelius history: Cornelius was founded in 1893 and incorporated on 4 March 1905. It was first known as Liverpool, but the name was changed to Cornelius after Joseph Benjamin Cornelius. The town came to be when a cotton firm relocated south of Davidson. During rainy seasons, the roads became difficult to navigate so many of the growers stopped at the new building to conduct their business. As time went on, the firm recognized the potential for a cotton mill, but had to locate the funds to bring the mill to pass. Joseph Benjamin Cornelius, a local investor, provided the money and the mill was built. The creation of Lake Norman in 1963 provided new recreation, lakeside property and a source of hydroelectric power for the area. Here is a history page forCornelius.
