The area was first known as Ames Turnout when the Meadow Branch Church was founded in the mid 1800s. A church school was soon opened and named for Washington Manley Wingate, a local minister and teacher. It wasn’t long before the town, itself, took on the name of Wingate. The school later became Wingate College and finally Wingate University. Wingate was chartered as a town in 1901.
