The community was named for its location on a path to the Waxhaw Indian settlement. The first post office opened on 12 March 1861, closing in 1866. It was reopened in 1870 and continued to operate. Early on, farming was the main support for the area. Once the railroad came in 1874, things became easier for all. Indian Trail incorporated in 1907.
