History & History Related Items Matthews history: Matthews was first known as Stumptown for the stumps left behind when farmers cleared the land for crops. Next, in 1825, the community was named for John Fullwood who ran the local inn and served as the postmaster. The Carolina Central Railway brought their line through the town on 15 December 1874. At this time, the name of the town was changed to Matthews to honor the director of the railroad, Watson Matthews. In 1879, the town was incorporated. Here is a history page for Matthews.
