History
Wake County was founded in 1771. It is governed by a seven-member county board of commissioners. They are elected to four-year terms. The commission hires a County Manager to oversee the day-to-day workings of county government.

The North Carolina Capitol

The capitol was completed in 1840, is one of the finest and best-preserved examples of a major civic building in the Greek Revival style of architecture.

This fine Victorian-style mansion, home to N.C. governors since 1891, once was described by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as having "the most beautiful governor's residence interior in America." Built from native North Carolina materials, it has been occupied by 26 governors' families.
