History & History-related items
As of 2011, Monowi has the distinction of being the only incorporated town, village or city in the country with just one resident. At its peak in the 1930's the town had 150 residents but after the railroad left it began to decline. The general store closed when World War Two started and the owner moved out of town to serve on the draft board. The now single resident of Monowi runs a tavern in the town. The village has a 5,000 book library called Rudy's Library. Her late husband's dream was to have a library in town and Mrs. Eiler made that dream come true after her husband died in 2004. Some of the roads in town are overgrown with grass and weeks rather than packed dirt, gravel or pavement. The now closed and delapidated general store has a sign on its front that says, Monowi, home of the Nite Owls. This tiny town has been featured on several television shows such as the Today show.
