The county has a seven member board
of Chosen Freeholders. They are elected, at-large, to three year terms that
are staggered.
One of the members of the board is chosen each January to be the directory and
another to be the deputy director.
All members of the board serve on various committees and oversee departments.

The county was named for Middlesex County in England. It was thus named because it was between Essex and Sussex, being in the middle. It was formed in 1683 from the province of East Jersey. Somerset County was carved from Middlesex in 1688 and part of Mercer County also came from Middlesex in 1838. The countywas incorporated in May 1785.
