History:

Humboldt County was created in 1856 and was one of the state's original nine counties in 1861. It was named for the Humboldt River. The river was named for a german naturalist whose name was von Humboldt. Before Winnemucca was made the county seat in 1873, Unionville was the first county seat in 1861.

Total area: 9,658 square miles
Land area: 9,648 square miles
Water area: 10 square miles

Elevation: 4,391 feet above sea level

The eastern portion of the county has the Santa Rosa Range running through it. Also in the county is a portion of the Humboldt National Forest and the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge.

Economy:

The main industries in Humboldt County are mining, agriculture and its services, tourism and construction. It is a prominent area for gold mining in the Western USA. It has over 100,000 acres under cultivation for agriculture. The gaming industry brings many tourists to the area. Also big drawing cards for the county are the wide open spaces and beautiful vistas. Hunting and fishing abound throughout the county. There are quite a few historical sites to be seen.
