History & History Related Items
The name, Ashtabula, means river of many fish in the Iroquois language. Ashtabula is well-known as a point with several stops on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War times. Early immigrants to Ashtabula and the area were mainly from Finland, Sweden and Italy. The groups usually stayed together which made life at the time slightly more difficult than it could have been.
Ashtabula has almost 30 miles of shoreline on Lake Erie and by the mid 1950's, the harbor here became a major shipping and commercial center.

The Ashtabula River Railroad Disaster occurred on this date. Other names for the accident were the Ashtabula Horror or the Ashtabula bridge disaster. As the Pacific Express of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway began to cross the river bridge, the trusses collapsed. One of the engines and eleven cars plunged 150 feet into the river. Fires started from the car stoves and nearly 100 people were killed.
