Bryn Mawr was first known as Humphreysville. It wasn't until 1869 and the coming of the Pennsylvania Railroad that the name was changed by William H. Wilson to Mryn Mawr. The name means big hill in Welsh. The origin is thought to be from the Welsh farm of Rowland Ellis who came to Pennsylvania in 1686.

This historic home was built in 1704 by Rowland Ellis and was called Bryn Mawr. The community is named for this home.
The American College Arboretum
Begun in 1959, it was officially named an arboretum in 1994. There are about 600 labeled trees along with other plants and a pond. It is located on the campus of the American College. here.
