History & History Related Items Carrolltown history: Carrolltown was laid out in 1840 and incorporated in 1858. Here is a history page for Carrolltown. This is an excerpt from the above history page: "When Father Lemke arrived at Saint Joseph's Church in 1835, as a pastor, he was sure that St. Joseph's Mission, as it had become to be known, was not the central point for the Catholic population in this region. On June 22, 1840 Father Lemke purchased 395 acres of land, the Curtis Clay Tract, from William S. Vaux, executor. This is the present day site of the Borough of Carrolltown and was the beginning of the town. The name of Carrolltown was chosen at the insistance of Father Gallitzin, in honor of Bishop Carroll, the first Bishop of the United States. "
