Portage was once a coal mining town. It is part of the National Historic Register

Portage was established during the 1830's. Construction of the began during this time. This would complete the link between waterways from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The portage would involve a 1,400 foot rise in elevation from the east and nearly 1,200 feet from the west.
In 1890, the Borough of Portage was incorporated on October 7th

Sponsored by: Portage Area Summerfest Committee
The Portage Area Summerfest is a three day event, always held the 2nd weekend in August. The Summerfest is a community sponsored event with music, food, entertainment venues, games, arts & crafts, a fireman's parade, spectacular fireworks display, and many other attractions that make the Summerfest weekend something special.
Admission is free.
