History & History Related Items Portage history: Portage was once a coal mining town. It is part of the National Historic Register Here is a history page for Portage. Portage was established during the 1830's. Construction of the began during this time. This would complete the link between waterways from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The portage would involve a 1,400 foot rise in elevation from the east and nearly 1,200 feet from the west.
