History & History Related Items

Known by the local Indians as Misquamicut, a word meaning a place for taking salmon. Westerly has a long history having been the first town incorporated in the Province on 13 May 1669, also the fifth town in the entire colony. The name was changed from Westerly to Haversham on 23 June 1686 but changed back again to Westerly a few years later in 1689. Several other towns were carved out of Westerly including Charlestown, Hopkinton and Richmond.

Westerly was particularly known for its granite that was used for many buildings and monuments in the area and across the country. It has also been widely used as a vacation and tourist area. With its location near the sea, water sports and activities are abundant but there are also many other beautiful vistas throughout the area.
