Location:

Washington County encompasses all of southern Rhode Island to the west of Narragansett Bay. Block Island is off shore about ten miles
To the north is Kent County and New London County in Connecticut is to the west. To the south is the Atlantic Ocean and east to the east is Narragansett Bay and Newport County. Block Island was transferred from Newport County to Washington County May 6, 1963
Basically, Charlestown, Exeter, Hopkinton, Narragansett, North Kingstown, Richmond, South Kingstown, Westerly and West Greenwich, make up what is known as South County

History:

First known as King's County the name was changed in 1781 to Washington County. Most residents know the area as South County rather than Washington County. Block Island, off the coast was originally occupied by the Manisses Indians, it was named after Dutch navigator Adrian Block, who discovered it in 1614. Later, in 1661, it was settled by a party of English from the mainland.
