Lexington County is governed by a council/ administrator form of government.
The Lexington Council consists of nine members elected by districts.

Lexington County was founded in 1785 by German settlers. It was first known as Saxe Gotha. After independence, the settlers wanted to honor their freedom and re-named it Lexington for the first battle of the Revolutionary War.
