History:
The settlers in the area were part of Gonzales County, but their desire for better roads and a shorter distance to the county seat led the settlers to have a separate county. Named in 1848 for Captain Matthew Caldwell, a scout and leader of a group of rangers, Caldwell County was formed on 6 March 1848. Captain Caldwell led the troops in the Battle of Plum Creek and also against Mexico. The county seat is in Lockhart.
