See this great history from the City of Lockhart
The original name for Lockhart Texas was Plum Creek. It was here that a terrible battle took place on August 12, 1840. At this time a large party of Comanche Warriors swept down the Guadalupe Valley all the way to the Gulf Coast, killing and plundering as they went. As the war party returned, a group of Texas Rangers and enraged settlers met them for the Battle of Plum Creek. Lockhart was named for Byrd Lockhart, who was one of the first surveyors of the town. During the 1870's, Lockhart was the end of the famous Chisholm Trail. Today not only livestock helps the economy, but agriculture, farming, oil and other industry help the area.
