Spanish explorers in 1691 discovered the Payaya Indian camp on a gentle river and named the site San Antonio. San Antonio was christened by Franciscan Father Damien Massanet on June 13, 1691; for the Indian village site and the river. He christened the name for the Feast Day of Saint Anthony of Padova, Italy (who is still entombed in a magnificent Basilica built for him in Padova).In 1718, Mission San Antonio de Valero was established. In 1836, that Mission, known better as "the Alamo", was the scene of a battle that inspired Texans to freedom. Now, San Antonio is the ninth-largest American city, urbane and cosmopolitan.
