The townsite was named on 25 May 1909 when the First Townsite Company was formed on the Artesian Belt Railroad right-of-way. The site was founded by A.M. Pyron, Carl Kurz and Jonas A. Kerr. Oil was discovered here in 1913 while Kurz was digging a well for artesian water. After this discovery, the area boomed with many wells and oil refineries.
