Castledale was settled in 1875 by Orange Seely, a cattleman in the area. He was a huge man of over 300 pounds who gave medical attention to the residents of the surrounding area, though he was not a medical doctor by education. The area is also known for its closeness to the peaks and spires of the San Rafael Swell where Butch Cassidy and other outlaws of the time hid away in Robbers Roost
