History & History Related Items Pineville history: Settled in 1840 at the junction of seven Indian trails, Pineville was named on account of the location at the original site of a black or pitch pine second growth forest. its first official name was Rockview, in 1872, when the Post Office was established. In 1891, the town was laid out and the name was changed to Castle Rock. Finally, in 1898, it was re-named Pineville. this occurred when the petition was made to move the county courthouse to the community. The courthouse was built in 1916 using native stone from nearby stone quarries. It was built in the Greek-Roman style. There is a statue at the courthouse square honoring Rev. W. H. Cook, a local soldier, statesman and minister. There is also a monument to veterans of World War II and to Kenny Shadrick, the first Korean war casualty here.
