Information & Facts about Wyoming County, West Virginia
History:
The origin of the name of Wyoming
is not known, but the name is said to mean "large plain." It was formed
in 1850 when Logan County was divided. There are many minerals and natural gas
in the area. Because of the rich deposits of ore, there is much coal mining
heritage here with camps and abandoned houses throughout the area. Twin Falls
State Park is located in the county with golf, hiking and more. R.D. Bailey
Lake has the second highest dam in West Virginia, rising up 310 feet. The county
seat is Pineville which was settled in 1840.
