Facts about Mercer County, West Virginia
History
The county was formed on 17 March 1937. The county was formed
from parts of Giles and Tazewell counties. It was named in memory
of General Hugh Mercer, a Revolutionary War general who died at
the Battle of Princeton in New Jersey.
It is considered to be the "Gateway to Southern Hospitality
and Black Gold." And is the southern-most county in West
Virginia. The county seat is Princeton which was burned to the
ground twice during the Civil war by its inhabitants to ensure
no valuables would fall into the hands of the opposing forces.
