Facts about Nicholas County, West Virginia
History:
The first permanent settlers here came around 1785 moving along
the Old Pocahontas Trail from the Greenbrier Valley. It was named
in 1818 after the former governor of Virginia, Wilson Cary Nicholas.
The county has many tales to tell of the Civil War era as well
as a thriving lumber industry. The county seat is Summersville
which was established in 1824. Summersville Dam is located in
Nicholas County.
