in the upper Verde Valley, about 83 miles north of Phoenix and 125 miles south of the Grand Canyon. Other nearby communities include Cottonwood, Jerome, Cottonwood-Verde Village, Cornville, Camp Verde, Sedona, Big Park and Lake Montezuma.

Clarkdale was owned by the United Verde Copper Company. The company provided housing and services for its employees. Mining was stopped in 1953.

Clarkdale is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
