History & History Related Items Adelanto history: The name, Adelanto, means to go forward or to progress in Spanish. The city has strived to do this very thing throughout its history. The city was founded in 1915 by E. H. Richardson. His original plan was to create a planned community here. He divided the land into one acre lots, specifically to assist those veterans of World World I that had respiratory problems. He hoped to build a respiratory hospital to also help these veterans. Though his plan was never fully realized, his hopes laid the foundation for what would become the city of Adelanto. Many fruit orchards were planted in these early years which eventually brought fame to the area for the fresh fruit and cider that were produced here. During the depression era of the 1930s, many orchards were replaced by poultry ranches. With the onset of World War II, the Victorville Army Air Field was created. While not within the city limits, it was nearby and within the sphere of influence. It was renamed for Brigadier General Harold H. George as George Air Force Base in September, 1950. Adelanto became a charter city in November 1992 after being originally incorporated in 1970. Return to Index Adelanto attractions: Adelanto has much to offer the outdoor enthusiast.
