The city of Canyon Lake began as a master-planned community in 1968 though the lake was created back in 1927. The developer was the Corona Land Company. It is just one of a few gated cities in the state.

Canyon Lake
The lake was formed in 1927 when the Railroad Canyon Dam was built. The lake has 14.9 miles of shoreline. The city winds around all the shoreline of the lake. No businesses are found within the city, but many are located just outside each of the city gates.

The Storm professional minor league baseball team is located in neighboring Lake Elsinore.
