History & History Related Items Lake Clarke Shores history: This area was once known as Florida Mango Grovelets. The actual name stems from John Clarke who purchased five acres of land near today's Hillcrest Cemetery. He began raising and processing pineapples here. By 1915 the pineapple boom was over as the railroad was extended and a blight ruined the crops. The lake on Clarke's land was named Lake Clarke. It later became more of a marsh once the Everglades were drained about 1917. The first real resident of the area was Zeb Vance Hooker who built a small structure in the southeast end of the lake around 1932. Several other families joined him over the next few years, but not until some land was dredged and a bridge built over the canal did the community begin to grow. The small community was known as Lake Clarke Isles in 1956. Here is a history page for Lake Clarke Shores. Return to Index
