History & History Related Items Jessup history: First known as Jessup's Cut, this small village was along the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. One of the civil engineers for the railroad was Jonathan Jessup and the town is said to have been named for him. The name was shortened to just Jessups in 1863 and then later around 1950 the s was dropped leaving simply, Jessup. There are several prisons in the area that are referred to by the inmates as the cut. The name probably came from the original name of the area.
