The Tehogee Indian Trail, built by the Canaze Indian nation in 1716, is still the River Road in the area today. Once settlers began to arrive, the area began to grow and develop. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was finished in 1829 in the area known as Offutts Crossroads. The name was changed later to Potomac. It was named for the Potomac River that flows by the town.
