When the first area land grants were handed out in 1754, Edward Diggs and Raphael Taney were given almost 8,000 acres. They laid out lots and sold them beginning in 1762. Taney, for whom the town was named, actually lived in St. Mary's County. He helped to design the layout and became the namesake, but never really lived here.

Genealogy Information in TaneytownI am trying to locate birth and death dates, and any other information pertaining to Mrs. Grace Sell (maiden name Auman) that resided in Taneytown, Maryland. She had a brother, John Wannamaker Auman, who was my grandfather. Her parents were William Richard Auman and Anna (Stauffer) Auman. If anyone knows of any information, I would be most grateful.
