East Greenwich was incorporated in 1677 as Green Town and was named for Greenwich, England. In fact, the town coat of arms has an hourglass on it in recognition of the observatory at Greenwich, England. There are also two anchors, standing for its harbor and for its position in the state of Rhode Island. It is the eighth oldest town in Rhode Island and has a rich history. King Charles II of England received the land from the Pequot Indians in 1644. As the town grew, so did the need for goods and services bringing many new businesses to the area. During this time, many new businesses were built with some historic buildings left even until today. Until 1854, the town was one of five state capitals for Rhode Island. The current town hall, which was the local courthouse at that time, was used by the General Assembly as a meeting place.
During the time the General Assembly met in East Greenwich, a resolution was passed to create the first formal, government authorized navy in the western hemisphere. The resolution, passed on 12 June 1775, specified the exact numbers of vessels, guns and men to be utilized. Though many other towns claim to be the birthplace of the US Navy, East Greenwich has the earliest date of them all.
