West Warwick was officially formed on 14 March 1913 when Warwick was divided. The original Warwick was created on 12 Jan 1642 and was named for the Earl of Warwick.

West Warwick was once a thriving mill town making textiles for clothing. Though the mills have closed, many are being refurbished and changed to become residential housing as apartments and condos.
