Location:
The county is a band stretching across the entire middle of the state, ending in Narragansett Bay. New London County and Windham County, Connecticut are on the western border, Providence County is to the north, to the east is Narragansett Bay and Bristol County. Washington County is to the south.

Kent County was formed in 1750 from Newport County.

Geography:
Total land area: 170 square miles
Total water area: 18 square miles
Total area: 188 square miles
The Pawtuxet and Flat rivers are the principal ones in the county though many small streams abound as well as a number of large ponds. The land is mostly flat and uneven.
