History & History Related Items Trinity history: Founded in the winter of 1872-73, Trinity had earlier been known as Kayser’s Prairie. The new town was a station on the Houston and Great Northern Railroad. The name Trinity is from the nearby Trinity River. First called Trinity Station, it was then changed to Trinity City and then to simply Trinity. The railroad bypassed the county seat of Sumpter around this same time with many of the residents of Sumpter moving to Trinity because of the change. Trinity then became the county seat on 20 May 1873. Then the seat was again moved in 1874 from Trinity to Pennington, though the railroad remained and the town continued to grow. Groveton is currently the county seat. Disaster struck a number of times in the early days of Trinity. Fire destroyed homes and businesses in 1892, 1909 and 1915 but was able to come back each time. Trinity was incorporated in 1910 and again 1916. Try this history page for Trinity. Here is another history page.
