History & History Related Items

Nephi was founded by Mormon settlers in 1851 and later named for Nephi, a Book of Mormon prophet. It was first called Salt Creek for the nearby salty stream. Schools and churches were built and people began to live here. Nephi incorporated in 1889. After 1882, mail was addressed to Nephi rather than Salt Creek.

The local residents farmed and raised cattle but also began a salt manufacturing plant in 1893. Salt was plentiful, but the company couldn't compete with the companies further north. Other industries were milling and gypsum. The railroad arrived in 1879 which helped the area grow more. The lines were moved around 1900 further west to the Delta area, but Nephi was able to survive the move.

Nephi Loop - Scenic Byway
Call (801) 785-3563 for more information. The loop reaches elevations of 8,000 feet and promises beautiful views. Four campgrounds are available along the route. The 45 mile road is open May through October. The road is accessible to cross-country skiers and snowmobilers in the winter.

Yuba State Park, 25 miles south of Nephi with camping, swimming, boating, fishing and handicapped accessibility.
