Return to Index History & History Related Items Nephi history: Nephi was founded by Mormon settlers in 1851 and later named for Nephi, a Book of Mormon prophet. It was first called Salt Creek for the nearby salty stream. Schools and churches were built and people began to live here. Nephi incorporated in 1889. After 1882, mail was addressed to Nephi rather than Salt Creek. The local residents farmed and raised cattle but also began a salt manufacturing plant in 1893. Salt was plentiful, but the company couldn't compete with the companies further north. Other industries were milling and gypsum. The railroad arrived in 1879 which helped the area grow more.
