History & History Related Items
Colorado City was originally known as Short Creek. It was founded in 1913 by members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. (not affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). The group wanted to live in a remote area where they could practice plural marriage. In 1953, a raid was made on Colorado City by troops sent by the Arizona Governor. The fight is known as the Short Creek raid. After legal battles, the governor's political career was ruined and the state basically left the community alone to live their preferences. Over the years, over incidents occurred but in 2007, the state took away the church ownership of the lands in Colorado City. In 2010, law enforcement officers from both Arizona and Utah came with search warrants and most city functions were shut down.
