History & History Related Items La Verkin history: Court records list the creek in this area as "Leiversking" which was later shortened to La Verkin. One source has the town named from this creek name. Others believe it to be a modification of the Spanish, "La Virgen," which refers to the nearby Virgin River. The gateway to Zion National Park and scenic Highway 89 is a peaceful community of 2,000 people. Overlooking Pine Valley Mountain, the town with its beautiful vistas is located at the intersection of SR-9 and SR-17. La Verkin was setled in 1891, and was famous for its unique irrigation system and prolific fruit orchards. Many of the orchards have been replaced with residential homes and a developing business district. Sound financial and community planning has insured a bright future for this progressive community.
