The town was settled first in the 1700's by Quakers. By 1808 it was incorporated as a town. During the Civil War, it was a stop on the underground railroad. In recent years, the town has become more of a bedroom community to larger urban areas nearby.

This building was erected about 1810. It was purchased by the city in 1989 for community use and restoration.

1814, August 26United States Capital for a day!
During the War of 1812 when the White House was burned, President James Madison fled Washington and found refuge in Brookeville on this date. While he stayed in Brookeville, it was considered the capital.
