Established in 1800 as Mechanicsville, the area was agricultural with mostly farming. One of the early residents, Sarah Brooke and Dr. Charles Farquhar enjoyed the work of English Poet, William Cowper. They named their home after his home town of Olney. The town eventually took on the same name as the home.
