History & History Related Items
Boulder City history: Boulder City was a planned community built by the government for the personnel in the area who were working on Hoover Dam in 1931. Incidentally, Hoover Dam was known as Boulder Dam until 1947 when it was renamed. The government built the town as a model city which they hoped the people of the country would look to as a symbol of a brighter future. Initially, those hoping to work on the dam began a tent city near the site which was known as Ragtown. Originally, the fledgling town was planned to house about 5,000 people. Business was limited at first, but gradually they were allowed. Also, at first, there were no schools provided as the government felt only single males would be living and working here. Rules were strict here in the beginning as with many company towns. Gambling and alcohol were both prohibited until 1969 when alcohol was allowed. Gambling is still one of just two towns in the state that does not permit gambling. The government retained control of the town until 1959 when it was incorporated. The date was 4 January 1960.
