History & History Related Items

Mayfield was settled in 1875 by twenty families who came from nearby Ephraim. John Williams opened the first store - housed in a tent - that was called the Mayfield Co-op. Before the large group of settlers, a few hearty residents lived in the area with the first house built in 1873.The area was first called Arropine for the Indian chief who gave the county to the Mormon Church. It was his favorite area in the valley. The name was later changed to Mayfield because the area is so pretty in the spring with wildflowers and greenery.
