It was incorporated on 11 April 1911. Sanger is known as the Nation's Christmas Tree City. This designation occurred in 1949 when the U.S. Post office recognized Sanger as such. Earlier, in 1925, the Chamber secretary, Charles E. Lee, asked US President Coolidge to name the General Grant tree as the Nation's Christmas Tree. It was so recognized in April 1926. It is located in the King's Canyon National Park. The annual Trek to the Tree happens every year on the second Sunday in December to honor the country's war dead. Local school children make a special trip to the tree during their third grade year to learn about the significance of the tree. At the end of the 19th century and into the 1920's, Sanger had the distinction of being the end of the world's longest lumber flume. It began in Millwood, over 50 miles from Sanger.
